He guided the SUV onto the shoulder and before he could even fully stop she jumped out and everything she ate came up. It seemed like all the food she had that week came up because she couldn’t stop. He felt so helpless and bad for her. All he could do was rub her back while she was puking her brains out. Once she was finally done she washed her mouth out with some water and then got back into the car.

DJ didn’t know what to say to her so the car was quiet. She leaned her head back into the seat and closed her eyes. He turned the satellite radio back on and let it play while he drove.

When the car came to a stop, Monique opened her eyes and took a deep breath. Her limbs felt like tree logs as she prepared herself to get out the car. She felt sick to her stomach and her heart was racing.

DJ looked over to her and said, “Are you alright?”

“No, but I will be,” and she opened the car door to get out.

Monique used her key to let herself into her parents’ house. When they walked in there was automatically a feeling of grief and despair lingering in the atmosphere. Everyone seemed quiet and running simply on autopilot. Monique and DJ hugged her parents when they got to the living room where everyone was. When she got to Jade, she couldn’t let go. She held Jade as her sister cried in her arms. Monique rubbed the back of her hair as she tried to comfort her by saying, “It’s going to be OK. We’ll get through this.”

Jade wiped her tears and they all sat down. Monique’s father was clearly having a hard time so he went back into his study as the rest of them sat in the living room. Monique’s stepmom filled DJ and Monique in on what happened with Malek.

Malek has always been a very outgoing, lovable person so he had a lot of friends that were older than him. One of his friends talked him into going to a frat party with him. Malek said he felt kind of funny about it because he didn’t really know any of the people that would be there. He told Jade before he left that he didn’t really want to go but the boy kept pressuring him and telling him how much fun it would be. She told him not to go if he didn’t want to but he went and said he was sure it would be cool. As her stepmom continued to tell her the story, silent tears fell from her eyes. It was like she was dreaming or watching a movie. She couldn’t believe they were talking about her brother and that this was all real. All she could do was shake her head in disbelief. One wrong choice and now her seventeen year old brother was gone for good instead of in school like he should be.
